As we mentioned in a previous post, The author and poet Maya Angelou said “Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with deeper meaning.”. Well that is certainly what we have attempted to do with the CCIE Voice Deep Dive self-paced Class on Demand series – that is to bring the human instructional voice element to infuse deeper meaning to what is already fantastic Cisco Documentation. Anyone that has set out and determined to undertake the task of studying for and ultimately passing any CCIE Lab exam, knows that at some point during your studies, the words on paper (Cisco Docs, RFCs, books) – while a absolute phenomenal source of information – can at times seem to loose their impact. Perhaps you have been studying too long, read one too many docs, have the time pressure of your family and friends waiting for you to return to be a part of their life, or perhaps you are just starting out on your adventure and don’t know where to begin. Whatever stage you are at or whatever the case may be, it is certainly helpful to have a tutor and mentor there beside you at times, assisting you in understanding what each complex technology’s documentation is trying to teach you, in possibly a deeper and more insightful way than you can manage on your own.

For each complex topic we have held (or will soon hold) an online class where we dive down deep and explore all the concepts, practical application, and troubleshooting associated with each technology topic. The general format for each Class-on-Demand Deep Dive module spends between 4-7 hours on the given topic for that day, and during that time follows this outlined training methodology:

  • Collectively discuss and teach all concepts involved in the technology
  • Whiteboard concepts to further deepen every participant’s understanding
  • Define a specific set of tasks to be accomplished
  • Demonstrate how the tasks and concepts are implemented and properly configured
  • Test the configuration thoroughly
  • Vary the configuration to understand how different permutations effect the outcome
  • Debug and trace the working configuration to understand what should be seen
  • Break the configuration and troubleshoot with debugs and traces to contrast from the working set

A while back, Cisco began consolidating all of the CCIE lab equipment used by candidates when sitting to write their practical lab exam. Most of the lab hardware now resides in San Jose, California US, with only the Storage and Wireless awaiting movement. While most of the CCIE tracks' practical lab examinations are able to be completely self-contained inside a single rack, the pesky Voice exam remains an abnormality with the need for hardware IP phones at the testing site where the candidate may sit for the exam.

Having the IP phones in a completely separate location -- and therefore seemingly an entirely different L3 IP subnet -- would seem to present a major challenge for candidates attempting to test certain configuration tasks such as Multicast Music on Hold, many QoS mechanisms, SRST, and even smaller things such as CDP discovery and DHCP. So how is Cisco able to get away with having phones at a remote location (5000 miles or more in some instances), and yet still allow candidates to configure and then properly test what they critically need to?

Layer 2 Tunneling - that's how. It's the only way to make phones "look" via CDP like they are connected to the same switch that they students are configuring on their rack - even if this couldn't be further from the truth (pun intended). This also allows everything else to function and work as perfectly as if the phone actually were on the same physical L2 wire, but alas, they most certainly are not.

Now to do this, it requires a good investment in a good number of additional routers and switches to make it all work, since after all there are a number of physical L2 LANs per candidate rack, and many more than simply one rack, not only in San Jose, but also at each remote testing site.

INE is very happy to announce that -- in both a strong desire to provide the exact same environment as the real lab, and also our response to listening to student requests from bootcamps this year -- we have put forth the necessary investment in both capital and man-hours to setup the necessary infrastructure to allow every Voice class that we run to be identical to taking a seat in the actual CCIE Voice lab exam. When you take a seat in any one of INE's Voice classes, that your 2 CorpHQ 7961 IP phones, your 1 Branch1 7961 IP phone, and your 2 Branch2 7961 IP phones will both appear to their respective site L2 switches, and function, just as if they were directly connected to your rack. It's as if we are now transporting each Voice rack of equipment with us no matter where we travel. Oh - did I mention that? This will be the standard no matter where you sit an INE Voice class - London, Seattle, Chicago, RTP, and anywhere else that we may have an on-site class requested and put together (some possibilities at the moment are Dubai, Bangalore, and Sydney).

On that note, we also just released our new training schedule with dates and expanded locations for 2011. Only dates through March are posted on the site at the moment, but the rest should be posted up either today or Monday (13 Sept).

So just to recap what you get when you train with INE for your CCIE Voice exam:

  • 5  7961 Hardware IP Phones on your desk in front of you, plus 1  7960 PSTN phone
  • Every 7961 IP phone functions exactly as it would as if it were physically and directly connected to its site's layer 2 switch (and just as it actually is in the real CCIE lab exam)
  • An instructor who has helped hundreds of people become CCIEs and who has been developing training materials and teaching the technologies needed to pass the CCIE Voice exam for over 5 years now

It is also worth updating everyone that we have released a few more CCIE Voice Deep Dive modules (scroll to bottom of linked page for each module details), and next week we will be completing two additional modules (both on different forms of Mobility) to round out our complete section relating to the CUCM server. So currently we are up to modules 1-12 and we have over 70 hours of class-on-demand style training with extremely detailed walk-throughs of every configuration and debug/trace in CUCM. Once we finish up the last two modules on CUCM, we will be moving onto CME, and you can expect the same level of detail on absolutely every aspect of that platform as well!

Here is a short list of the recent updates to some of our CCIE-related products:

R/S and Security

The exciting new troubleshooting IEWB-RS VOL4 now has three full-scale labs! Each new lab is over 60 pages in length, featuring detailed breakdowns and explanations of the important troubleshooting processes. Another lab is on its way to be added to IEWB-RS VOL4 very soon.

New blueprint topics, specifically MPLS VPNs and new Security features, are to be added to IEWB VOL1 next month as well. I know many of you are excited to see these additions!

Security IEWB-SC VOL2 now features a completely updated full-scale Lab 5, and Lab 6 is on its way.

Next, as some of you may have noticed, the R&S rental racks were booked solid during August. To satisfy growing demand, our partner company, GradedLabs, has added extra racks to the R&S rental pool, and this issue should be taken care of now.


New features have been added through your members site for Voice Rack rentals. You can now easily setup a PSTN test phone by simply entering the “mac-address” on an online web form. The phone configuration will be taken care of for you. In addition, you can now reload your routers and switches within your rack with the initial configurations, or soon to come lab configurations, including pre-built troubleshooting scenarios. Both of these features are covered in detail in the Voice Rack Access Guide.

Finally, Voice Volume I, is undergoing large updates this week, with new sections being released continually. Look for the newly updated Call Routing section, followed by part two of the CUCM labs These cover media resources, applications, and advanced features and services. The Unity Connections section will be released in the next few days, followed shortly by Presence and CUCCX. The updated QoS labs will be released next week as well.

Probably one of the most difficult parts of the updated CCIE R&S exam will be the Troubleshooting section (you may check our recent poll to confirm that). So far, not much is known about this one. It has been announced that a separate topology will be used for this part of the exam, and the candidate will be required to obtain 80% of the total section score to pass is successfully. The exact amount of points allocated to this section is not know, but there should be around 10 “incidents” or “trouble tickets” covered.

Feeling that this section will be the most difficult to CCIE candidates, we started working on the new VOL4 part of our renowned IEWB-RS workbook. In this new product called "Advanced Troubleshooting Labs" we present you with ten scenarios each consisting of ten trouble tickets. This amount should be approximately equal to the number of the troubleshooting tasks you will encounter in the actual exam. The topology used for every scenario is the same that we use for all our RS products, including VOL1 (technology-focused labs), VOL2 (full-scale mock lab scenarios) and VOL3 (core technologies scenarios). You may already order the new product at introductory price and start practicing! New scenarios are to be added to VOL4 on regular basis (target rate is one-two new labs per week) so you should be fully covered by the time blueprint changes.

Our ultimate goal is not only prepare you for passing the Troubleshooting section of the CCIE R&S lab exam, but also to teach you a structured troubleshooting approach. As opposed to simple guessing and peeking at the routers running configurations you should learn using the debugging commands and interpreting various show commands output. For every ticket, we are going to follow the same structured procedure to resolve the issue and provide an in-depth illustration of the process.

Further voice updates for IEWB-VO VOL1 have been released today, and will continue to be released this week. Two new reference guides have been posted covering in demand topics. The first guide is the Registering Remote SIP Softphones, which covers step by step instructions for registering a free SIP Phone on your local computer to our Voice rental racks. The addition of SIP phones to the new lab blueprint allows for a free and easy to setup testing environment. This guide is available through the Rack Access Info section in your members site.

The second reference guide is the beginning of a Voice Command Reference. This guide covers often used troubleshooting and verification commands, along with brief descriptions and sample output. The guide is developed to focus on the commands that are key to verifying and troubleshooting each technology used in the CCIE voice track. This guide will be continually updated with new commands as further lab sections are released.

In addition, new labs have been posted for the CUCM section. Call routing will be completed this week, in addition to the new Gateway/Gatekeepers section. Finally, additional in-depth explanations, troubleshooting and verification sections have been updated for both the CUCME and CUCM sections.

As for R&S, we're currently working on the new addition to VOL1, which outlines the troubleshooting process in general, defines strategies and provides troubleshooting examples. This is to be released the next month. In addition to that, we’re preparing separate troubleshooting labs to be delivered in addition to VOL2 scenarios. Those will use separate topologies and will use a trouble-ticket pool that we develop. As for technology updates, we’re hindering that a bit and giving more priority to the troubleshooting scenarios. Personally I believe that adding troubleshooting to the CCIE R&S lab is the most important change, as it affects the whole lab strategy

There were people asking for our new R&S rack topology. We delayed that announce, because the one we’re currently working with would probably be expensive for many people using their own racks. We’re looking for a ways to implement our workbooks on a hybrid, less expensive topology. But if you want to know what being used now – it’s 5x1841s for R1, R2, R4, R5 and R6 and one 2811 for R3. All cabling connections and switches remain unchanged. If you would pick up that topology, you wont miss anything (well maybe some money); but if you’re trying to minimize the upgrade expenses, we’ll do our best to make that possible.

For R&S, there are two new IEWB-RS VOL2 labs (Lab11 & Lab12). Those two are basically re-worked versions of older VOL2 labs, better balanced and formatted to match the blueprint. For SC, there is new IEWB-SC VOL2 Lab4 (full-scale) packed with new features for you guys that need more challenge. In addition to that, there are new labs posted under IEWB-SC VOL1 "Hotfix" sections. Here is the full list of the labs currently in this section:

Real quick, a short overview of our recent updates


new "Hotfix" section posted to VOL1 v5.0 area. This new section is designed to cover the recent addition to CCIE SC blueprint. So far it’s just about 50 pages, but we’re going to update it constantly until we cover all “hot” topics. Check it out for some new ASA features, IOS FPM, ZFW and CPPr.

VOL2 Lab3 has been released with updated solutions. Lab4 should be coming out this weekend as well.

Routing & Switching:

Look into your VOL2 v5.0 area to see updated Labs 8 and 9 added there. We’re going to post additional four labs this week and then switch back to releasing the updates for CCIE RS v4.0 track.

We are excited to announce our newest release of IEWB-VO VOL1 labs covering the new CCIE Voice blueprint, which becomes effective as of July this year. The first of the CCIE Voice v3.0 labs are now out in beta format, in addition to new Voice Racks available to rent covering the new topology! All current customers who have purchased IEWB-VO VOL1 will automatically receive the new updates in their members account at no additional cost. Each section of the new VOL1 includes technology-focused labs with explanations, verifications, further reading links, and dedicated troubleshooting sections.

The initial release covers Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express (CUCME, formally known as Call Manager Express or CME). We will continue releasing new voice content covering all new blueprint topics, with a new section being released each week. The next release will include more CUCME labs, as well as Unity Express tasks, followed by the first of the new Unified Communications Manager Labs! The new voice racks are fully compliant with the CCIE Voice hardware specification posted at Cisco’s website: CCIE Voice Hardware Specification. To many folks out there, the new hardware lists is a huge relief, as the many old and expensive devices including the 6500 switch and the VG248 are now gone. Plus, the addition of SIP phones allows for more flexible choice of softphone software, not limited to the small set of SCCP-compatible products available on the market.

As for the people preparing using the old blueprint, our rack rentals support the old CCIE Voice hardware specification as well. Nothing will change until the lasts days the old blueprint remains valid.
